REQUIREMENTS

After a successful tender submission, Nairn Construction Ltd were engaged by Jones Bros Civil Engineering to provide all necessary supervision, labour, plant, equipment and materials to carry out and complete the ducting, concrete troughs, concrete foundations, fencing and gates as detailed within the Subcontract and drawings pack to form a new battery energy storage systems (BESS) facility in Erskine.

Battery storage, or battery energy storage systems (BESS), are advanced devices that enable energy generated from renewable sources, such as solar and wind, to be stored efficiently. These systems allow for the stored energy to be released when it is most needed, thereby providing a reliable power supply to the network area where they are located. BESS play a critical role in balancing supply and demand, enhancing grid stability, and optimizing the utilisation of renewable energy, ultimately contributing to a more resilient and sustainable energy infrastructure.

APPROACH

After reviewing the design information from the client, Nairn Construction Ltd started on-site by installing the initial drainage systems and laying the cable ducting for this BESS project. These initial tasks set the stage for constructing the cable trough structure and erecting the perimeter fencing, both of which needed to be sequenced carefully to keep the wider programme on track. Completing the drainage and ducting first was crucial for ensuring the smooth progression of the rest of the works.

THE KEY WORKS CARRIED OUT BY NAIRN construction WERE AS FOLLOWS:-

  • Diversion and upgrading of existing drainage including forming new headwall and installing perimeter cut off drainage.
  • Pouring Over 1200m3 of concrete into formed reinforced bases
  • Installation of Perimeter security fencing
  • 4000m of cable ducting between the troughs and the plinths

RESULTS OF THE BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS PROJECT

The works are now complete, marking a significant milestone in this battery energy storage systems project. With the initial construction phase successfully finished, the client is now progressing with the battery fit-out and cabling works. This next phase involves installing the battery systems and connecting the necessary cabling to ensure efficient operation of the energy storage facility. The timely and effective completion of these foundational works — including over 1,200m³ of concrete, 4,000m of cable ducting and full perimeter security fencing — has provided a solid platform for these ongoing activities. This project adds to Nairn Construction’s growing track record delivering civils for BESS and wider renewable energy infrastructure across Scotland.
