REQUIREMENTS
Nairn Construction Limited were engaged to carry out works to an old Filter House in the heart of the Lake District. Phase 1 works consisted of upgrades to the existing access road and culverts in order to be able to access the property. Phase 2 consisted of Site clearance of all debris and vegetation clearing the landscape around the property, as well as repointing works to the existing stonework to improve the stonework fabric and fitting new doors to secure the property.
The stunning location of the project made it a pleasure to work on. We look forward to seeing the next phases progress with this special property.
APPROACH
Due to the remote location of the structure and the restricted access we had to carry out the road and drainage culvert upgrades first. We had to utilise all terrain plant and 4×4 vehicles to transport materials to the locations of works due to the difficult terrain we faced and had to plan works to suit favourable weather conditions to keep our workforce as safe as possible.
The works carried out were as follows:-
- Road repairs to gain access to the property
- Culvert repairs to manage water run off
- Culvert upgrades to increase run off capacity
- Site clearance works to clear the property of debris, rubble and vegetation
- Repointing of existing stonework to seal the walls
- Installation of new doors to secure the property
RESULTS
The aim of phase 1 and 2 was to provide safe access to the property and to secure the property to allow the client to progress the future design of the property.

Testimonial
“I acquired a property deep in the mountains of the lake district. Very remote 1km up a steep narrow track. The track needed rebuilding and all the culverts replaced. Nairn did a wonderful job with little input from me. They also replaced doors, lintels, built parking areas and repointed. I hope to get them back soon.”
